Jill Segal

Founder. Owner. Our top cupcake.

On June 20, 2026, the St. Louis culinary community lost a beloved friend. Jill Segal, the visionary founder of Jilly's Cupcake Bar & Café, passed away after nearly two decades of building a place where every customer felt celebrated.

Her Story

In July 2007, Jill Segal opened a small bakery on the corner of Delmar and 170 in University City. She had a simple idea: make cupcakes bigger than the day — cupcakes so generous, so unapologetic, that they reminded people every moment was worth celebrating. Birthdays. Weddings. Tuesdays. The promotion. The breakup. Making it through the week. Whatever it is, she'd say, that's worth a cupcake.

From the start, Jill partnered with Pastry Chef Casey Shiller to develop every cupcake on the Jilly's menu — a creative collaboration that turned a corner bakery into a destination. Together they built a flavor lineup as bold as Jill herself, recipes that would go on to define the shop for nearly two decades.

Jilly's grew fast. Two trips to Food Network's Cupcake Wars brought home two wins. USA Today named the shop one of the top ten places in the country for a gourmet cupcake. The Daily Meal ranked her #7 in the nation. St. Louis Magazine, Sauce, Riverfront Times, Ladue News — they all kept handing Jill awards for Best Cupcake, year after year.

But the awards were never really the point. The point was the woman behind the counter who remembered your order, who asked about your mom, who slid an extra cupcake into the box on a day she could tell you needed it. Jilly's became a piece of the Delmar Loop because Jill was a piece of the Delmar Loop — a working owner, an open door, a steady presence for nineteen years.

In 2014, she expanded with the Ice Cream Bar. Cuban Coffee. Salted Browned Butter Pecan. 24 KT Carrot. Flavors only Jill would dare to put on a menu. The bar pulled an A-List award in its first year. Jilly's cupcakes and cheesecake bites landed in Dierbergs and Schnucks bakeries across the region — a quiet pride for a hometown bakery that never lost the warmth of a corner shop.

Jill is survived by her team — the bakers, the front-of-house, the chefs she trusted to keep her recipes alive — and by a city that grew up on her frosting. The shop on Delmar remains open. The cupcakes are still oversized. The welcome is still warm. That is exactly how she wanted it.

"Jill really set the bar high."
